Tuesday, June 6th … Day 31 … Arizona, Grand Canyon Road Trip

Tuesday, June 6th … Day 31 … Jacobs Lake, Arizona, Grand Canyon Road Trip

Off to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, long 45 mile drive down a narrow road, no one around, wide open meadows , deer, antelope, forests. Perfect morning, arrived at the visitor’s center which is situated next to the Lodge and dozens of nice log cabin rental units. Parking lot is packed with cars and the center isn’t even open, come to find out the majority of the cars are from the renters. Again we chose the hike that is the farthest out, another beautiful drive, roads much more narrow, don’t look down….. got it? Whew! Stopped a few times at overlooks, sun hasn’t burned of the night and the colors weren’t as bright as they are later in the day, at least from where we stood, but still breathtaking. No one around.  Our hike took us through a mature Ponderosa Pine forest with patches of young Aspen Trees, blackened stumps and logs were strewn about, the forest floor was covered with soft grasses and large patches of wild Lupine. The aroma of the pines and flowers filled the crisp morning air. It was just a few years ago that this portion of the park received an RX burn and reforested. Amazing, after hiking for 2 miles we arrived at the canyon rim, peered out at different  viewpoints and crept closer and closer to the edge to try and grasp just how colorful, vast and deep this mighty canyon is. To put it simply; it is very big! All said and done we hiked about 4 ¼ miles today. Down the road a ways we enjoyed another one of my Carol’s picnic lunches. Campers dine “out” a lot. Off we go, heading back, along the way Carol spotted a small herd of wild Bison all lying down in a large meadow with their new young. Pretty cool, aay? …………….
