Saturday, July 15th … Day 69 … Sol Duc Hot Springs Campground, Olympic National Park, Washington

Bacon, Eggs & Home fries, breakfast of champions! Mid forties this morning a hot cup of coffee and the smell of pine trees in the air, nice to be in the forest again, let’s rephrase that…. deep in a rain forest again …. much different then the Redwoods as the under growth here is much shorter, mostly high bush wild blueberries(indulged in a few hand fulls!) and ferns cover the floor the hemlocks are about 75’ tall and the giant spruces well over 100’! Moss hanging everywhere and no place to walk except on the path, deep and dense. Waiting to see that massive bull elk shaking his head or the cougar stalking along the ridge, what a place! The forests have been here a long, long time and we are just passing through … Great walk today, lots of waterfalls, a wide variety of terrain, hike ended up being about 7-8 miles, got back to our trailer about 1pm, lunch, then we took off to the hot springs for a nice soak. The Sol Duc Lodge(no frills) is here and the park manages the springs, tempering them with glacier water from the S.D. river, 3 pools at different temperatures(up to 107) and a swimming pool heated to 72 deg. Just what we needed Split and roasted a chicken on the grille for supper then off to another soak ……………..
