Tuesday, June 27th … Day 52 … William Tugman State Park, Lakeside, Oregon … Day Trip!

Full night’s sleep, nice and cool, never got over 65 yesterday. Went to a place today called the John Dellenback Dunes Trail, managed by the Forest Service, 6 miles, rated difficult, allow 4-6 hours. It was nearby so we thought we would give it a shot, if it was too tough we can always turn back and find a nice bakery. The trail started light for a ½ mile then we approached the sand dunes, largest on the Oregon coast, short hills, some treed areas with pockets of water, open and yes sandy. The dunes have a beauty all their own, every now and then we come across a small flower that manages to flourish and stand up against this desolate and dry atmosphere, the steady winds lay perfectly drawn contour lines in the sand adding yet another layer of texture to this remarkable landscape….Pretty cool to be right there and in it….. Marker posts were positioned every 100 yards or so, not always easy to spot.(you don’t want to get turned around out here). We wore hiking boots, footing was a little challenging but not at all the quick sand we experienced in Colorado. Ok we can do this, upon crossing the dunes we were up against a scrubby forest, the trail immediately turned to mud and water. Not turning back now, off go the boots then our spa treatment began mud then sand then water, over and over again, we also packed flip flops and they came in very handy during this portion of the course. Arriving in a tunnel carved through the bushes and up and on a long winding wooden footbridge we finally made it to the ocean. It was all ours, we could see some people way off in the distance. Water was warm and calm enough for a swim but the air temp and wind was just a little too cool. We rested, strolled a little, had a snack and headed back. I think our endurance is picking up a little as we finished our excursion in just 4 hours.(will check damages in the morning, ha!)
